kasama. legacy. history.
Claremont Colleges’ Kasama was founded in 2016, under a class taught by Professor Todd Honma of Pitzer College. As Kasama works to keep its legacy and history, we honor the founders and the older alumnae that came before us in creating this space for 5C Filipinx students.
Maraming salamat and we hope to continue to build the Kasama community!
Special thanks for Dr. Michael Manalo-Pedro, previously the Asian American Resource’s Center’s Director, for being a supervisor for years and we wish you the best in your endeavors.
Community Building
Kasama is a vibrant community for Filipinx students across the 5Cs that organizes cultural events, study breaks, and shared meals to foster connection and celebrate our heritage. We also host a language table, creating space for learning and cultural exchange. Through these activities, we empower Filipinx students to explore their identities and build a supportive network.
Political Education
Kasama is not just a social space—we also uphold political education, focusing on the transnational Filipinx experience and acknowledging our identities both in the Philippines and across the diaspora, including the U.S. and beyond. By fostering dialogue around these issues, we empower students to critically engage with our shared histories and advocate for justice. As we continue to grow, we hope to expand our impact, deepening our commitment to cultural and political empowerment.
Solidarity
Kasama stands in solidarity with global movements, including Palestinian liberation, recognizing the importance of collective action and cross-community support. We encourage our members to go beyond simply building a Filipinx student community and to actively engage in understanding what solidarity looks like for other BIPOC groups. By fostering this awareness, we strive to cultivate a sense of shared struggle and support for justice across marginalized communities.
